The Opportunity:
The role of the FSQA and Sanitation Manager is to provide site leadership by ensuring that all products leaving the facility meet the highest standards of food safety and quality. The FSQA and Sanitation Manager acts as an advocate of the customer and consumer by ensuring that their expectations are consistently met and reflect the plant’s capability through approved product specifications, quality standards, and sanitation practices. He/she will ensure that quality systems are built into the manufacturing of products and that auditing systems are in place to audit compliance and to provide feedback or take corrective actions as required. He/she will also ensure that the facility sanitation is executed as per universal food manufacturing standards to ensure production of safe product for the consumer.
Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:
- Provide Quality site leadership and recommendations to the Operations group on quality and food safety related issues. Is responsible for holding and releasing non-conforming product, ingredients, equipment and halting production based on food safety assessments.
- Provide Sanitation site leadership and recommendations to the 3rd party Sanitation Contractor. Is responsible for monitoring, reporting, and managing key sanitation practices and metrics.
- Investigate consumer/customer complaints in a thorough and timely manner
- Site contact for the Pest Control operator
- Manage the plant FSQA and Sanitation budgets
- Champion Environmental Initiatives
- Ensure procedures are effective to optimize food safety, product quality, sanitation consistency and product shelf life
- Act as the primary in-plant contact for: customers on quality inquiries, CFIA inspectors, plant sanitation vendor and HACCP system audits
- Act as the primary in –house “crisis management” lead (product recovery)
- Liaise with MLCF IOC Quality Assurance Group with respect to overall food safety and quality management
- Develop and maintain a Food Safety Quality Assurance program to ensure product quality and safety with due emphasis to conformance and audits of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
- Facilitate and coordinate all employee training in the following areas: GMPs, HACCP, Hygiene, Plant Safety and Sanitation
- Analysis and trending of data for measured quality, food safety, and sanitation parameters (i.e. environmental swabbing, complaints, pathogen reduction measures)
- Develop, enhance, execute and champion successful HACCP as the key member of the HACCP team.
- Contribute as a key member of the Plant Management team in strategic decisions, continuous improvement and Six Sigma initiatives
- The Quality Assurance Manager will be the point of contact for the local CFIA staff to ensure that the HACCP program conforms to the standards specified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency
- Contribute as a key member of the Plant Management team in strategic decisions, continuous improvement and Six Sigma initiatives
- Effective site quality leader demonstrated through progressive improvements and consistency in the plant’s ability to meet customer/consumer/ regulatory expectations
- Effective measurement systems utilizing Six Sigma metrics to provide feedback and recommend corrective action in a proactive fashion
- Professional point of contact for regulatory agencies and customer contacts
- Be seen as a Leadership Edge Values role model to employees and direct reports
What You’ll Bring:
- 2 to 5 years experience in a Food Safety Quality Assurance management role in the food industry
- Post Secondary education in related science field; Microbiology / Food Safety preferred
- Experience in the food processing industry is a requirement for this position
- Experience with the development and or maintenance of HACCP plans
- Working knowledge or exposure to Six Sigma or continuous improvement
- Ability to set and prioritize goals and objectives and communicate these to peers, subordinates, and senior management
- Effective written and oral communication
Detail Conscious with exemplary organizational, analytical, and planning abilities
- Proficient in Microsoft Word/Excel, Windows
- Energetic and positive attitude
- Ability to work effectively in a team or independently in an ever-changing, fast paced environment
