Director, Corporate Sanitation and EMP

 The Opportunity:

The Director, Corporate Sanitation and EMP leads both the corporate Environmental Monitoring Program (EMP) and Sanitation programs by driving performance, standardization, and program development across the plant network. The role provides technical support to a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders including executive senior leadership and plant senior leaders, as well as plant sanitation leaders, sanitation contractors and chemical suppliers.  The incumbent will partner with corporate Engineering and Purchasing and is an integral member of the Food Safety Quality Assurance, Technical Services and Sanitation (FSQATSS) community.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:

  • Provides strategic direction and thought leadership oversight for the Environmental Monitoring Program (EMP) to ensure the Listeria control program and all swabbing programs mature, data analytics and the deployment of industry best practices. Keeps current with regulatory changes to EMP in the US and Canada and proactively adjusts program, manages change and communicates.
  • Drives program standardization and provides oversight for plant network deployment to ensure sanitation programs are positioned to deliver cleaning effectiveness, efficiently and with minimal degradation of assets. The diversity of plants includes hatcheries, harvesting plants, and a wide variety of Ready To Eat (RTE) processing plants.
  • Provides technical support for all sanitation and sanitary design related matters by working across business functions (Operations, Purchasing, FSQA, Engineering) to drive value from vendors (sanitation chemical suppliers and contract cleaners) and to ensure equipment is designed, purchased and installed to provide accessibility to be cleaned and can be cleaned effectively and efficiently.
  • Supports the plant network by providing sanitation and EMP expertise for a variety of activities including solution-focused firefighting / problem solving, continuous improvement (CI) efforts and transformation projects.
  • Externally focused to ensure sanitation and Listeria control practices at Maples Leaf Foods (MLF) remain world class through collaboration / knowledge sharing, support on food safety matters through industry associations (Meat Institute and CMC), and support industry when requested. 
  • Lead the development, revision every 2-3 years, and continuous improvement of MLF’s Sanitation Strategy, performance metrics and CI efforts.
  • Engage in senior leadership as Sanitation SME and provide coaching and mentoring across the network to all levels and teams.
  • Actively engage in the FSQATSS leadership team and support FSQATSS community initiatives and activities.
  • Oversee the leadership a of direct reports with talent development and succession planning focus

What You’ll Bring:

  • Minimum 15 years of relevant leadership experience across multiple functions (e.g. Sanitation, FSQA, Engineering, Maintenance, Operations).
  • Post secondary formal education, preferably in the areas of Microbiology, Food Science, Chemistry, Engineering or related field.
  • High degree of functional competency and technical understanding in sanitation practices and sanitation chemistry.
  • Knowledge of the role sanitation practices and sanitary design play in the plant’s ability to manage Listeria control. 
  • Strategic business leader with ability to effectively build and drive programs.
  • Demonstrated cross-functional influential leadership and proven ability to coach and manage individuals and teams.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Effective situational leadership demonstrated by applying the appropriate leadership style for a given situation.

  • Proficient with Word, Excel, Power Point, and Minitab.
  • Manages ambiguity by offering solutions rather than presenting problems when escalating issues.
  • Strong analytical skills and able to translate data into information and insights that “connect’ with intended audience.
  • Willing team player by helping others through support without boundaries or conditions.
  • Active learner, receptive to feedback and coaching for both self-improvement and program success.
  • Thought leadership to provide ideas / content and share knowledge.
  • Self-starter, comfortable working independently.
  • Must be able to travel as part of regularly scheduled events and unplanned emergencies that require pivoting.
  • Ability to work on the sanitation shift for troubleshooting, coaching and assessments as needed or requested.
