Project Engineer

 The Opportunity:

Maple Leaf Fresh Foods in Hamilton, Ontario is presently seeking a Project Engineer to join our team at our state-of-the-art facility. This position requires an individual with extensive experience in project management with the ability to multi-task in order to complete medium to large sized projects simultaneously.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:

  • Develop and manage (Capital) project plans, operations, budgets and schedules (annual and multi-year)
  • Provide engineering support for the operations group
  • Assist senior management in developing and justifying capital expenditure requests
  • Investigate practical, cost-effective and innovative plant improvement solutions
  • Utilize and incorporate Six Sigma and other project management tools, methodology and principles
  • Negotiate contracts and supervise equipment vendors, service providers and contractors
  • Actively participate in company initiatives; e.g. Innovation, Share groups, MyMLF, Energy Efficiency.
  • Provide technical support in areas of expertise to troubleshoot and identify root causes of failures and determine best strategy to improve reliability
  • Review spare parts strategies to optimize equipment availability.
  • Support continuous improvement of maintenance professionals/technicians, engineers and reliability specialists to improve their skills in trouble-shooting, root cause analysis, and development of proactive maintenance strategies.
  • Function as the point person to address technical issues in several classes of equipment as the subject-matter-expert
  • Work with corporate Asset Reliability (AR) group to advance the site reliability maturity in alignment with the corporate strategies.
  • Lead and own the site’s RCM initiatives (Asset Criticality Analysis, Critical Spares Analysis, FMEA, MTA (Maintenance Task Analysis), sporadic or chronic RCA).
  • Drive the establishment of risk-based, condition-based, and predictive maintenance.
  • Interface with internal and global teams to translate improvements.
  • Identify, engineer and implement projects/programs to increase productivity and reliability.
  • Routinely monitor process parameters and PdM data of critical systems. Review and analyze the respective performance KPIs to predict and prevent failures. Proactively address operational or integrity issues with corrective action recommendations.

  • Develop and optimize equipment strategies and lead efforts to eliminate performance killers
  • Develop solutions to repetitive failures and all other problems that adversely affect plant operations (RCA, RCM and FMEA)
  • Utilize SAP and other computer applications effectively and efficiently
  • Collect and track work identification KPIs related to the proactive maintenance program
  • Involved in the design and installation stages of projects for new assets and modification of existing assets
  • Review and resolve Production losses and abnormally high Maintenance cost assets
  • Manage risk to the achievement of MLF’s strategic objectives in the areas of environmental health and safety, asset capability, food quality and production
  • Lead efforts to ensure reliability and maintainability of equipment, processes, utilities, facilities, controls and safety/security systems
  • Define, design, develop, monitor and refine maintenance strategies based on asset performance
  • Provide technical assistance to review equipment rebuilds and Supplier performance
  • Travel as required.

What You’ll Bring:

  • 5 years’ experience as an engineer or Mechanical/Electrical Technologist, or 10 plus years of equivalent project experience.
  • Proven track record of handling multiple medium to large sized projects.
  • Team player with effective leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, analytical and planning abilities combined with practical business sense.
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office and Project Management software).
  • Working knowledge of industry codes and regulations e.g. OH&S, WHMIS, HACCP.
  • Knowledge and experience with Food industry would be an asset.
  • Fluency in the English language
