Poultry Veterinary Student
Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Position Overview
The Poultry Veterinary Student will support flock health, welfare, and quality initiatives within Maple Leaf Foods live and fresh poultry operations while gaining hands-on experience in commercial poultry production. This role provides exposure to industry-leading veterinary, quality assurance, and production practices, while assisting with initiatives related to poultry health, animal welfare, and food safety.
Working alongside licensed poultry veterinarians and cross-functional teams, the student will contribute to programs focused on continuous improvement in flock health, hatchery performance, quality, and animal welfare. This role provides flexible learning opportunities based on current needs of the business and learning objectives of the student. All clinical activities will be conducted under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, in accordance with applicable provincial regulatory requirements.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life
(Essential functions and learning opportunities include, but are not limited to):
  • Assist in delivering technical support related to poultry health, including preventive medicine, diagnostic sampling, vaccination programs, welfare auditing, antimicrobial stewardship, and laboratory procedures
  • Participate in supervised flock health visits and postmortem examinations for broiler breeders, hatcheries, and occasionally broilers
  • Support data collection and analysis related to bird health, welfare, and performance measures
  • Assist in reviewing bird husbandry practices and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Support investigations related to hatchability, incubation, and chick quality
  • Contribute to training materials and educational initiatives across poultry operations
  • Assist with Maple Leaf Foods initiatives related to animal welfare, antimicrobial use, biosecurity, and food safety programs

What You’ll Bring
  • Currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program, with a minimum of one year completed
  • Eligible to meet provincial veterinary regulatory requirements for veterinary student employment in the province of employment
  • Strong interest in commercial poultry production and production medicine
  • Demonstrated communication and teamwork skills
  • Professional, objective, and eager to learn in a fast-paced production environment
  • High ethical standards
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data management tools
