Position Title: Student Intern, Procurement and Hatchery

Location: Edmonton

Reports To: Hatchery Manager, Procurement Manager and Technical Services Lead

An exciting opportunity has opened up for one (1) energetic, results oriented individual within one of Maple Leaf Foods fastest growing markets as a Summer Intern within our Procurement and Hatchery team. Maple Leaf Foods is a well-established progressive company.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Hatchery Manager, Procurement Manager and Technical Services Lead, the Student Intern will work directly with the hatchery, procurement department, and farm field services. This is a full-time position from May-August 2023. Hatchery work is hands-on, and experiences may include receiving/setting eggs, candling, transferring, cleaning/sanitizing, and chick quality assessment. Procurement experience includes communication with farmers and third-party stakeholders, scheduling, completing settlements, basic data analysis, and working with hatchery and plant teams. Field service experience includes shadowing field technicians and/or veterinarians during farm visits, auditing, necropsy posting, and assisting with field trials. Regular communication with producers, hatchery, processing facilities, live haul, technical services, and Procurement Manager is required.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work with direction from different departments including Hatchery, Live Operations and Technical Farm Services
  • Support daily hatchery responsibilities including, but not limited to receiving/setting eggs, assisting FSQA sampling, transferring, operating tray wash & box washer, sanitation, general labour
  • Support daily procurement responsibilities including, but not limited to daily settlements, preparation of off-feed times, scheduling, coordination of lease agreements, entering chick orders, deposits, photocopying, filing
  • Conduct communications with stakeholders such as, but not limited to farmers, live haul, catching crews, Alberta Chicken Board
  • Provide support to field trials conducted by technical farm services such as, but not limited to trial preparation, trial design, data download and analysis with a possibility of assisting in field with trials
  • Maintain procurement data bases and assistance with data entry/analysis
  • Assist with vacation coverage as necessary
  • Work collaboratively with other departments in addressing issues or concerns related to live operations
  • Provide effective and timely responses to producer concerns/issues (may require flexible working hours at times)
  • Possibility of sampling and environmental monitoring procedures in poultry barns as directed by technical services
  • Assist with field trials in poultry barns as directed by technical services
  • Typing/compiling meeting or visit notes for sharing with broader team
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
  • Must be a currently enrolled post-secondary student either entering or currently in faculty-approved 3rd or 4th year studies in either Animal Science, Animal Health, Microbiology, Quality Assurance, or Food Science program, or other related fields
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and analytical skills
  • Good listener with strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Well established organizational and time management skills to manage multiple tasks
  • Reliable
  • Perform well in high-stress scenarios
  • Must have a class 5 drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Confident in operating Microsoft Office applications and Excel graphing applications
