The Opportunity

 Maple Leaf Foods is exposed to commodity, foreign exchange, and interest rate risk through its operating and financing activities. Maple Leaf’s Treasury and Risk Management Department analyzes and mitigates these risks by using a variety of tools such as forward contracts, futures, and options. Additionally, The Department oversees and manages the Company’s insurance programs. The Department provides risk management services to the Company’s operating units and reports the Company’s risk position to Senior Management and the Board of Directors.

           The Risk Analyst will support the operating units in identifying risk exposures, reporting on risk management activities, and implementing hedging and insurance solutions. This individual also assists in month-end closing procedures, provides analysis on ad-hoc requests, manages the day-to-day aspects of the insurance program, and develops expertise in the Company’s risk management programs.

A snapshot of some of the exciting things you will lead and do: 

  • Work with operating units to monitor the Company’s risk exposures and assist in the implementation of new hedging strategies
  • Monitor currency, interest rate, and commodity markets to provide insights and identify hedging opportunities
  • Perform reporting on risk management activities, complete settlements with trading counterparties, and enter transactions into treasury system
  • Implement hedge accounting requirements to manage the impact of derivatives
  • Assist in regular updates to Senior Management and the Board of Directors
  • Work with Manager, Risk Management and Senior Analyst, Risk Management to complete month-end/quarter-end closing and reporting procedures
  • Work with Senior Analyst, Risk Management to improve processes and streamline workflow
  • Manage the day-to-day aspects of the insurance program such as issuance of certificates of insurance, information gathering, and preparation of coverage summaries
  • Assist the Risk Management team with ad-hoc requests
  • Develop core expertise in financial risk management, including the use of financial derivatives (forwards, futures, options) to hedge Maple Leaf’s commodity and foreign exchange exposures
  • Become a subject matter expert on foreign exchange, commodity, and interest rate markets
  • Gain an understanding of complex accounting for derivatives and hedging relationships
  • Develop expertise in the Company’s insurance programs
  • Provide input into the enhancement of current processes which will serve to strengthen the risk management framework and improve Company oversight

What you will bring:

  • Completion of a finance or commerce post-secondary program. Master’s degree an asset
  • Completion of financial modelling courses an asset
  • 0-2 years of experience working in Treasury, Risk Analysis, or with derivatives preferred
  • Preference will be given to those who have enrolled or have progressed towards a professional designation (CPA, CFA, or FRM)
  • Interest in financial markets and understanding of foreign exchange, interest rate, and commodity risk
  • Strong mathematical skills and an ability to grasp accounting concepts
  • Ability to present complex technical concepts to a wide range of audiences
  • Strong Excel and financial modeling skills (VBA experience would be an asset)
  • Experience using Bloomberg and treasury management systems
  • Demonstrated team player with a can-do mentality and positive attitude
  • Desire to learn and to be challenged
