The Opportunity

 As the leader of the Transportation team, the Director, Transportation is responsible for developing and implementing third-party transportation selection strategies that provide cost effective transportation capabilities to meet or exceed customer requirements for all of Maple Leaf Foods (MLF). The Director owns all commercial matters pertaining to third-party transportation and warehousing and ensures performance meets or exceeds MLF and customer requirements. The annual third-party Transportation spend is approximately $145M

A snapshot of some of the exciting things you will lead and do: 

  • Provide strong leadership to ensure effective development of direct reports and to build a world class transportation sourcing, operations and analysis team
  • Shape distribution strategies and achieve supply chain objectives that drive overall MLF business results
  • Coach and inspire teams to navigate solutions and continuous improvement in a demanding environment
  • Enable development of future Distribution leaders via talent management and succession planning
       Carrier Sourcing
  • Lead the development and implementation of long-term carrier selection and management strategies in collaboration with Transportation Planning, Procurement and Business Leaders
  • Lead all carrier sourcing initiatives including development of Request for Quotations / Proposals (RFQ/P), analysis, negotiations and final contracts
  • Implement core carrier program to reduce total number of common carriers
  • Continuous analysis of the Canadian and U.S. transportation industry to fully understand all aspects of the industry including supply and demand, cost drivers, technologies, carrier profiles and capabilities
  • Work with Procurement to ensure appropriate sourcing tools, templates, processes and technologies (e.g. e-procurement) are employed
  • Ensure internal compliance with approved carriers across MLF network
  • Develop and maintain one carrier and freight rate database across MLF
  • Work with Finance and Distribution on all budget activities and costing requests (e.g. new product development, customer pick-up, etc.)
       Carrier Management
  • Develop and maintain carrier performance metrics and scorecard
  • Work with Transportation Planning and other stakeholders to resolve issues and provide practical cost-effective solutions
  • Ensure carrier performance meets MLF standards and customer needs
  • Conduct regular performance and business reviews with carriers
  • Lead joint MLF and third-party carrier process improvement initiatives
  • Work with carriers to develop e-commerce infrastructure (EDI, web portals, electronic POD’s, etc.) in conjunction with MLF Information Solutions Team
  • Oversee and resolve all freight related claims for MLF
       3PL Logistics
  • Accountable for the performance of our 3PL warehouses and dedicated carriers
  • Lead the monthly Period Review Process for Transportation including document preparation and pre-meetings with key stakeholders
  • Champion improvement projects
  • Ownership and maintenance of freight rates in SAP
  • Prepare business plans and budgets
  • Periodic travel required

What you will bring:

  • Brings a diverse perspective that complements the skills, strengths and opportunities of the team
  • 10+ years of Logistics experience, leading diverse teams
  • In-depth knowledge of the food or consumer packaged goods industry in Canada
  • Significant Operational experience in carrier contracts, performance management and freight costing
  • Related post-secondary degree, diploma or professional designation (e.g. CITT, P.Log.)
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and quantitative skills
  • Diverse perspective that complements the skills, strengths and opportunities of the team​
