Position Summary:        
Maple Leaf Foods is exposed to commodity, foreign exchange, and interest rate risk through its operating and financing activities. Maple Leaf’s Treasury and Risk Management Department analyzes and mitigates these risks by using a variety of tools such as forward contracts, futures, and options. The Department provides risk management services to the Company’s operating units and reports the Company’s risk position to senior management and the Board of Directors.
The Risk Management Analyst is responsible for daily maintenance of Maple Leaf’s risk management system, including ensuring that trade data, derivative valuations, and exposures are correctly recorded and reported. The Risk Management Analyst assists in month-end closing procedures, provides analysis on ad-hoc requests, and will develop expertise in the Company’s risk management programs.

 Position Responsibilities:

  • Daily position valuation and reporting for all derivatives
  • Daily confirmation and reconciliation of trades with counterparties
  • Work with operating units to monitor the Company’s risk exposures and assist in the implementation of hedging strategies
  • Complete hedge accounting testing in accordance with accounting standards
  • Work with Manager, Risk Management and Senior Analyst, Risk Management to complete month-end/quarter-end closing and reporting procedures
  • Work with Senior Analyst, Risk Management to improve processes and streamline work flow
  • Assist the risk management team with ad-hoc requests
  • Develop core expertise in Maple Leaf’s commodity and foreign exchange exposures and hedging strategies
  • Gain experience and understanding of financial markets and derivatives
  • Provide input into the enhancement of current processes which will serve to strengthen the risk management framework and improve Company oversight 
  • Completion of a finance or commerce post-secondary program
  • Preference will be given to candidates pursuing the CFA designation
  • Previous experience in a finance/treasury role an asset
  • Completion of CSC and/or Derivatives Fundamental Course would be beneficial
  • Strong Excel and financial modeling skills (VBA experience would be an asset)
  • Knowledge of derivatives valuation (forwards, futures, options)
  • Strong mathematical skills and an ability to grasp accounting concepts
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg and/or treasury management systems
  • An interest in developing risk management expertise
  • Demonstrated team player with a can-do mentality and positive attitude
  • Ability to work in a challenging environment and comfortable with uncertainty and change
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
