SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor the Maintenance Lead Hand is responsible for the overall maintenance duties of the plant equipment. Emphasis is on preventative maintenance programs and facility maintenance internally and externally.  This needs to be done while adhering to quality and safety legislative guidelines and the Maple Leaf Values.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Health & Safety / Food Safety / HACCP/ Animal Welfare / Shift:
  • Maintain safe and clean work environment by educating and directing maintenance employees on the use of equipment and resources while maintaining compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring Standard Operating Procedures, Animal Welfare and Safety Guidelines, and all requirements within the framework of the HACCP Food safety program are being followed.
  • Assist the Maintenance Supervisor and other Supervisors as he or she works closely with the Health and Safety Committee on required changes and improvements.
  • Provide updates at the monthly Safety Talks and assist in presentations as required.
  • Hours of work consist of Weekends with planning and crossover completed on Fridays and Mondays.
Planning / Prioritizing:
  • Engage and understand daily maintenance operations while anticipating and troubleshooting equipment issues.
  • Complete maintenance plan by assisting the Maintenance Supervisor in scheduling and assigning employees, establishing priorities, revising schedules, and resolving problems.
  • Carries out the preventative maintenance program on all equipment to ensure that down time is minimized.
  • Provides the essential repairs and maintenance duties on all other equipment and where necessary.
  • Assist the Maintenance Supervisor for the care and maintenance of the buildings and the outside property.
  • Helps the Maintenance Supervisor to maintain an adequate inventory of parts and supplies to maintain the building and equipment by periodically reviewing stock levels with direction of the MRO Supervisor.
  • Complete appropriate documentation accurately and timely.
  • Support Supervisors by promoting and encouraging positive employee relations through daily interactions, feedback and communication with employees.
  • Provide feedback to the Maintenance Supervisor on maintenance performance, product and/or personnel issues.
  • Train new or existing maintenance staff on specific job skills as they relate to their specific area or task.
  • Inform alternate maintenance shift of any relevant maintenance information.
  • Fill in, when necessary to cover off the Maintenance Supervisor for short absences.
  • Available to carry out special assignments that are assigned. 
Accountabilities:
  • Meet with Maintenance Supervisor for daily directions.
  • Ensuring that all production and sanitation equipment are in operational condition before start up and end of shift.
  • Ensuring that all equipment is operating within manufactures specifications.
  • Performs routine checks of production and sanitation equipment throughout the day to ensure all processes are delivering specifications and communicate any deviations with Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Ensuring effective communications between Hourly staff and Maintenance Supervisor. 
Operational Continuous Improvement:
  • Help to achieve Continuous Improvement in processes to implement cost reductions while maintaining quality.
  • Strive to continuously improve performance: employee relations, yields, labour results, equipment, sanitation, personal and employee job knowledge, etc.
  • Participate and support in Continuous Improvement projects and business plan.  
Employee Relations:
  • Contribute to team work and foster positive employee relations by communicating effectively with peers, employees and managers.
  • Maintain working relationship with the plant and employees by following the terms of the company policies.  
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Post-secondary diploma and/or degree (e.g., Mechanical, Electrical) or equivalent work experience.
  • Ticketed Journeyperson is considered a strong asset.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and SAP.
  • Displays good leadership skills/people skills.
  • Clear writing/reading English.
  • Effective communication skills to lead, motivate, and coach staff.
  • Well established organizational skills to manage multiple tasks.
  • Self-starter with good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Willing to learn and continuously improve and willingness to embrace change.
  • Flexible to work shifts.
  • First aid/CPR an asset.
