POSITION SUMMARY:

Position key responsibilities are providing technical and operational leadership regarding laboratory procedures, quality management system, and biosafety compliance, and performing routine laboratory procedures in accordance with quality standards. A variety of microbiology, laboratory, necropsy, and documentation management tasks will be performed on a daily basis.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical leadership to poultry laboratory team
  • Coach and support laboratory team through MySuccess personal development and performance program
  • Provide day to day scheduling and direction to laboratory staff
  • Responsible for the execution of laboratory biosafety programs in accordance with Risk Group Level 2 requirements of the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Human Pathogens and Toxins Act
  • Responsible as Biological Safety Officer for Ag-Ops Laboratories
  • Responsible for the knowledge of and compliance to those aspects of the Quality Management System under the laboratory’s Scope of Accreditation, including the creation and revision of related documentation and standard operating procedures
  • Preparation of Lab’s daily activities; reagents, media, equipment start-up, and lab cleaning and disinfection
  • Support the Lab Sample Analysis System through the collection, preparation and data entry pertinent to tested samples
  • Conduct a variety of microbiological analyses as per standard operating procedures; these tests may include the handling of pathogenic organisms from poultry and environmental sources
  • Prepare, perform, and document serological tests such as ELISA and plate agglutination
  • Assist with performing, documenting, and reporting avian necropsies
  • Data recording in Lab Data Base and Laboratory Information Management System
  • Support Q.A. programs through scheduling of various sample, testing, and vaccination requirement
  • Conduct Oocyst Per Gram (OPG) testing, reporting, interpretation, and analysis of results
  • Conduct verification checks and procedure documentation in order to support the Accreditation requirements of the Microbiology Lab. This includes but is not restricted to incubator temperature checks, lab disinfection, waste preparation and removal and other tasks as assigned
  • Support client and customer requests within internal guidelines
  • Report and distribute test results to clients once test data has been approved
  • Perform monthly inventory, purchasing, and receiving of supplies and goods
  • Perform sensory evaluations on shelf life products and ensure lab is well stocked and resourced. Maintain lab equipment
  • Will be involved in other areas of development such as assisting in yearly budgeting process
  • Conduct training of new personnel
 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Post-Secondary education, preferably a degree in microbiology or food science/microbiology
  • One to two years experience in Agriculture or Food Industry
  • Supervisor / Coaching/Mentoring experience an asset
  • Good understanding of Safety Codes and Good Laboratory Practices
  • Familiar with the Canadian Biosafety Standards and Guidelines
  • Ability to analyze results and create recommendations and opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Computer Skills: skilled user of Microsoft office applications and Excel graphing applications
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
