POSITION SUMMARY:

The Breeder Service Technician is a highly technical role and is responsible for representing the Hatchery while leading and influencing contracted Breeder Growers and Hatching Egg Producers to follow broiler breeder management best practices. The result is the producer and the hatchery maximize hatching egg quality and volumes.  The Breeder Service Technician maintains open communication with internal and external stakeholders to ensure issues are addressed appropriately, regulations are followed and animal husbandry and welfare standards are achieved.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work closely with the hatchery, breeder grower, hatching egg producers and veterinarians to maintain flock health, production, hatching egg quality, hatchability and to resolve problems related to any of these.
• Responsible for evaluation and implementation of management techniques and emerging technologies that improve field performance through contact with primary breeder companies and other industry organizations to understand flock management recommendations based on breed and product advancements.
• Provide flock management recommendations in regard to brooding, feeding, bodyweight, fleshing, disease prevention, egg production/quality, fertility and flock health and welfare.
• Using the national hatching egg producer quality program (CHEQ) provide environmental management recommendations in regard to ventilation, water treatment, lighting, litter management and pest control.
• Monitor bird welfare and overall flock condition and report findings to hatchery and producer.
• Responsible to communicate with production coordinator/hatchery manager at hatchery regarding flock performance for egg supply.
• Responsible to communicate as required with provincial regulatory laboratories for bird health and quality programs.
• Accountable to deliver the annual hatching egg production budget and performance objectives.
• Monitor and ensure correct administration of the vaccination program, including advising producers on vaccine administration, preparing vaccination schedules, maintaining inventory, preparing purchase orders, order preparation, and delivery of vaccines.
• Responsible for collection and submission of samples for salmonella monitoring (AHEP/PIE programs), serology and quality assurance monitoring as directed by the hatchery and the AHEP Salmonella Enteritidis policy.
• Responsible to adhere to visitation schedule as outlined in hatchery program, including day old placement.
• Responsible to submit documents to meet primary breeder and provincial board requirements.
• Develop reports for all producer flock records for placement, production, mortality to track and analyze flock production data to identify trends, changes, possible challenges and opportunities for improvement.
• Perform various SAP data processing tasks related to movement of goods, quality management, inventory management, and orders delivered.
• Perform quality assurance and trouble-shooting tasks on farms and in the hatchery and evaluate data to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Routinely evaluate scientific literature and industry technical information for possible implementation, and communicate to producers as necessary.

POSITION OUTCOMES:
The Breeder Service Team achieves the quality and quantity of product expected and needed by MLF and the Producer. The role continuously evaluates results, policies, programs, procedures, resource effectiveness and operational efficiency to ensure MLF Breeder Program is adapting to the changes in genetics that occur routinely.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:

The successful candidate will be results-oriented, thrive in a fast paced, demanding environment, and have the ability to develop positive working relationships with producers, associates, and employees. Candidates must have:
• Post-secondary education, preferably in agricultural or animal science or business or related field (or equivalent work experience)
• Minimum 5 years of poultry experience; supply managed commodity experience an asset
• Strong knowledge of animal science, nutrition and broiler breeder management best practices
• Strong desire to educate and drive continuous improvement initiatives through the adoption of best practices with interpersonal and influencing skills
• Strong analytical and reporting skill set with ability to provide recommendations
• An ability to work independently; be self-motivated and enthusiastic
• Strong time management and organizational skills  
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint knowledge
• Proven ability to create and maintain successful relations with producers/suppliers in difficult situations
