POSITION SUMMARY:

This individual will be responsible for overseeing the Food Safety and Quality (FS&Q) operations of Maple Leaf Foods distribution centers and 3PL storage providers. There is one direct report located at the EDC (Eastern Distribution Center) and a dotted line relationship to the MWDC (Mid-West Distribution Centre). This individual will be located primarily at the EDC and is a member of the management team at the facility, supporting best-in-class performance at the facility in the areas of Quality Assurance and Food Safety. They will also be required to be on-site at the Meadowvale Campus in Mississauga, ON, approximately 2 days per week. This individual will identify improvements to the Distribution Centers’ Food Safety programs and drive sustainable implementation of those improvements at the facilities while being mindful of contractual agreements with the 3rd party warehouse management group.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop, administer and maintain HACCP / Pre-requisite program at the Eastern Distribution Center (EDC) to meet MLF corporate food safety & quality standards
• Process owner of the MLF HACCP Monitoring records development, and the FSEP bullets supporting the food safety system at both MLF storage facilities
• Process owner of the MLF Company Standards for; MLF Hold & Release, Cold Chain Tracking, Trace-ability & Mass Balance, Carrier Food Safety Requirements, Storage Facility Food Safety Requirements (MLF and 3PL sites)
• Leads the regulatory required annual HACCP & Food Safety system reassessment activities at the EDC and the MWDC
• Ensure our distribution facilities are in compliance with regulatory requirements (CFIA and USDA and potentially FDA)
• On-site person to lead the facility food safety activities at our DCs in the event of a product recall or stock withdrawal
• MLF point person at EDC to address building and/or product food safety concerns and questions raised by the warehouse management team
• Ensure CFIA import inspection program is functioning, adhered to and meeting regulatory requirements and MLF personnel are notified when CFIA pathogen sampling is required from products controlled within DC inventory
• Support and/or lead internal and external audits at EDC and MWDC (Corporate Internal Audits, CFIA audits, 3rd party audits)
• Ensure timely closure to necessary corrective action items associated with any 3rd party audits, MLF Internal Audits, CFIA audits, CFIA issued CARs, or CFIA CVS tasks
• Assess out of compliance situations related to storage or distribution issues, and provide final disposition decisions for all suspect finished goods including product from Customer returns, Customer refusals, potential temperature abuse, damaged goods and product involved in accidents during transport
• Oversee and ensure proper handling and securing of finished goods placed On Hold in SAP and in DB Schenker’s Red Prairie Warehouse Management System
• Primary contact at the EDC to investigate and resolve hold and release discrepancies between MLF’s SAP system and DBS’s (DB Schenker) Red Prairie warehouse inventory management system
• SPOC to support requests and specifications from MLF Supply Chain, Customers & 3PLs related to storage and distribution
• Technical resource in the face of our Customers supporting MLF Sales to resolve questions and out of compliance conditions specific to Storage & Distribution
• MLF Prepared Meats approver within the ECR workflow for changes to finished goods Shelf Life and creation of new SKUs
Initiator of annual MLF Mock Recall at all MLF manufacturing sites, to meet CFIA requirements and GFSI requirements
• Manage the execution of the annual traceability exercises at all MLF manufacturing sites
• Foster a strong and respectful working relationship with contracted warehouse management teams and MLF Supply Chain teams
• Support and assist with required Food Safety/ Food Defense training, standard operating procedure development and review within MLF distribution centres
• Provide coaching and mentorship to MLF employees and contracted storage providers related to food safety & quality in Storage & Distribution


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:
• Post-secondary degree in Food Science, Microbiology or related Science based program
• Working knowledge of food chemistry, microbiology, allergen controls, auditing, GFSI/BRC, and sanitary design in a food manufacturing environment
• At least 5 years leadership experience in a related food (meat preferred) Federally Registered manufacturing facility
• Hands-on experience in a warehouse facility including import and export experience with CFIA
•Thorough understanding of HACCP principles and Canadian Regulatory requirements
• Proven Leadership during preparation & execution of MLF Internal Audits, GFSI audits and CFIA Section 4 audits
• Excellent observation, attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving skills
• High sense of energy & urgency while maintaining a positive attitude
• Exemplary oral and written communication skills and written document skills
• Well developed coaching skills
• Proven leadership abilities including influencing skills, ability to defend a decision or position using facts and logic

Proficient in SAP and MS Office tools
• Work effectively in a team and independently
• Demonstrated ability to forge partnerships with multiple cross-functional areas including CFIA Regulatory personnel/contracted warehouse employees/Senior Warehouse Management Leaders 
• Valid driver’s license
