POSITION SUMMARY:

The incumbent will be responsible for providing direction and leadership to all associates and visitors to the Courtneypark facility, and is responsible for ensuring consistent administration and compliance with all health and safety regulations and programs.  This position is also responsible for development and delivery of the company-wide Health and Safety program, as well as managing all WSIB claims.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Establishes and promotes the maintenance of safe and healthy working conditions to associates, visitors and contractors.
  • Recommends way to reduce or eliminate industrial accidents and health hazards in collaboration with supervisors and managers, and the JHSC.
  • Acts as a resource to management in health and safety related matters.
  • Advises on regulations relative to Company responsibilities and liabilities.
  • Investigates substantial safety related incidents and accidents and makes recommendations to remedy and/all casual factors.
  • Conducts training needs analyses, develops programs, promotes, coordinates and/or delivers program, policies and procedures to promote safe work practices which comply with all municipal, federal and provincial legislative requirements.
  • Develops and maintains a program for the determination of exposure to any chemical/physical agents and recommends appropriate solutions to rectify or manage the exposure.
  • In conjunction with the Plant Manager, represents management in meetings with the Ministry of Labour.
  • Researches data, conducts surveys, makes recommendations and compiles reports as required with respect to health and safety.
  • Maintains statistical data for reporting requirements.
  • Maintains Plant Chemical list.
  • Ensures that all safety audits are conducted and documented appropriately.
  • Provides input for annual budget preparation.
  • Sources and requests health and safety supplies and PPE as required.
  • Records, administers and maintains all WSIB claims.
  • Administers and maintains the Return to Work program through consultation with Supervisors, Managers, Associates and Union.
  • Represents the Company’s interests through contestation regarding claims management with various government organizations and tribunals.
  • Participates on external associates and committees to ensure knowledge of legislation is kept current.
  • Champions the Manufacturing Excellence Health and Safety Chapter.
  • Ensures that a high level of morale is maintained among associates and creates an environment where associates are motivated to achieve company goals and objectives.
  • Confers with managers and supervisors of other departments to coordinate inter-department activities and provide feedback regarding inter-related department issues.
  • Initiates and participates in the design and implementation of improved production and cost reduction methods through the use of Six Sigma.
  • Analyzes and resolves safety issues, and assists workers in solving safety-related problems.
  • Interprets company policies and procedures to associates including but not limited to HACCP, GMPs and health and safety requirements and ensures compliance of same.
  • Complies with all company and government legislated health and safety policies and practices.
  • Takes appropriate corrective action when personnel under their direction are in breach of company and/or government legislated HACCP, GMPs, ESA and health and safety policies and practices.

  • Other duties/tasks as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate and motivate at all levels.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective supervisory skills.
  • Proven working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and any other applicable legislation.
  • Good working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software (ie. Lotus Smart Suite, Microsoft Office).
  • Working knowledge of Six Sigma methodologies and tools.
