This position requires a highly motivated and results-oriented individual with a keen ability to initiate and recommend packaging expertise and solutions to the Marketing, Purchasing, and Operations teams.  The successful candidate will play a key role in new product launches/line extensions, the identification of cost savings opportunities, vendor qualification process and refinement of existing packaging specifications to reduce cost and waste within Maple Leaf Foods plants.


  • Cost Reduction
  • Oversee the testing of packaging from new suppliers to support the transition of business
  • Packaging Issue Resolution
  • Provide technical support to plants as required
  • Packaging Infrastructure Development
  • Create and maintain packaging specifications
  • Act as a technical resource to projects as required
  • Conduct packaging and machine trials, transit tests at plants to validate product life cycle, including storage/handling/distribution
  • Build and maintain good working relationships across functions and stakeholders, as well as new packaging suppliers in the development and execution of packaging projects
  • Contribute to the ongoing process to reduce overall packaging and sustainability
  • Support innovation through sourcing and developing new packaging formats and materials


  • Ensures quality and safety standards are met, and that materials are evaluated for compliance and applicable legislation with pre-requisites as defined 
  • Pursue Packaging Sustainability Initiatives and the push to reduce, re-use and go green
  • Document and report packaging trials and achievements
  • Uses knowledge and skills to deliver Value Optimized / Engineered formats
  • Develop strong working partnerships with Packaging Material Suppliers, with demonstrated ability to get quick response with a focus on “right first time”
  • Develop and maintain material specifications in SAP against established timelines, and ensure data is accurate to allow workflows to be accurately and quickly completed


  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Packaging Engineering, Science, Technology, or related discipline
  • 2-5 years’ related industry experience
  • Good knowledge of packaging manufacture and methods, packaging material use and the machine interface
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams and motivating others to deliver project deadlines
  • Structural design experience coupled with knowledge of materials is necessary
  • Ability to initiate, deliver and drive developments to completion
  • Knowledge of legislation and environmental aspects, relating to food industry packaging standard
  • Computer literacy, including report writing and technical data maintenance
  • SAP knowledge/experience is an asset
  • Good diagnostic skills, the ability to assimilate information quickly, and aptitude for problem solving
  • Collaborative style with excellent communication skills
  • Highly motivated individual with strong influencing skills
  • Strong project management skills, excellent ability to plan, organize and prioritize activities
  • Willingness to travel
