POSITION SUMMARY:


The Director, Commodities Risk Management is a critical, high impact role at Maple Leaf Foods (MLF).  The Director is responsible for managing and executing hog futures trading for all MLF hog positions and exposures.  Additionally, the role manages and provides guidance to the Maple Leaf Pork Forward Contracting Program and provides professional, high quality information, analysis and recommendations to MLF Senior Executives regarding commodity risk management.  Combining exceptional analytical and problem solving skills, the Director ensures MLF is positioned for both short and long term success.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership in MLF’s strategic Commodity Risk Management direction.
  • Develop and execute risk management strategies for MLF’s Hog and Pork commodity exposures.   Set financial targets and have ownership of these targets.
  • Develop monthly risk management reports for the Risk Management Committee.
  • Provide risk management support, strategic insight, and education to MLF’s operating business units.
  • Research market fundamentals and prepare analysis and reports on an ongoing basis. Develop expert industry awareness.
  • Provide Risk Management support to ML Pork procurement staff as they service needs of internal and external suppliers.
  • Conduct Risk Management benchmark studies as necessary.
  • Provide information and analysis to the Investor Relations team.
  • Mentor and develop staff in the area of Risk Management.  Assist in decisions within the operating teams as required.
  • This role is a leader within the company on our overall Risk Management strategy and the development of the department. Provide ideas and leadership into how to continually improve our capabilities. Must become a “student” of the industry.
  • A leader of project teams that examines commodity risk exposure to MLF. Identifies opportunities for profit enhancement/cost reduction and leads in its realization.
  • Take on special projects as required.
 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate or Graduate Business or Agriculture Degree with 5 to 10 years work experience trading agriculture commodities.
  • Demonstrated competencies in project management, analysis, problem solving/decision making, communications, and creativity/innovation.
  • Background and knowledge in agribusiness. 
  • Experience in managing a hedging program would be highly beneficial.
  • Professional disposition, able to prioritize work and operate with little direction.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated alignment to our Leadership Values.
