The role of the Maintenance Planner/Scheduler is to improve work force productivity and work quality by anticipating and eliminating potential delays through planning and coordination of labour, parts and material, and equipment access.

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager and maintaining liaison between Operations and Maintenance, the planner/scheduler is responsible for planning, scheduling, and coordination of all maintenance work performed within the facility. The planner/scheduler is also responsible for the maintenance of records within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and other files that are essential to meaningful analysis and reporting of maintenance-related matters.



  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates corrective and preventive maintenance activities;
  • Evaluates and manages work notifications;
  • Analyzes job requirements, determining materials, equipment, and labour needs (such as drawings, special tools, parts, and craft workers’ skill requirements) in order to complete maintenance economically and efficiently;
  • Ensure that when the work is ready to be performed, there are no preventable delays during its execution;
  • Develops a weekly schedule in the CMMS and assists maintenance supervisors in determining job priorities;
  • Reviews next week’s schedule with the maintenance team and operations, and locks it in;
  • Maintains a complete and current backlog of work orders in the CMMS;
  • Ensures that the CMMS software data files are complete and current;
  • With support from headquarters, develops standardized codes for the equipment and task craft assignments for all maintenance activities;
  • In consultation with maintenance supervisors, reviews information being input into the CMMS for accuracy and completeness;
  • Supports the maintenance and/or reliability engineer(s) in identifying and reviewing equipment maintenance problems;
  • With support from headquarters, the planner/scheduler may identify a need to revise the job plans as necessary to improve and enhance plant operations; and
  • All other related duties as assigned.


The successful candidate will be:
  • At home in a manufacturing environment and have 2+ years of experience in a maintenance planning/scheduling role;
  • A university or technical college graduate with a degree, certificate or diploma in a related field;
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in dealing with people in a Unionized environment;
  • An excellent communicator, readily able to develop cross-departmental relationships;
  • Familiarity with RCM and equipment health monitoring technologies;
  • Strong analytical and computer skills. Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and experienced with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems such as SAP PM;
  • Knowledgeable in best practices in a maintenance environment and familiar with what word class looks like;
  • Able to leverage the CMMS to generate key performance indicators and monitor benchmarks; and
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma and TPM.
Highly desirable but optional qualifications include:
  • Knowledge and experience with HACCP an asset; and
  • Membership in PEMAC or any other professional maintenance association, with or without an MMP designation an asset.
