As a key member of the Research, Development and Technology leadership team, the Director of Packaging Technology will lead packaging development for Maple Leaf Foods.  Utilizing outstanding leadership skills and a deep expertise in packaging technology, the Director is responsible for innovation, cost, manufacturing efficiencies, quality, and reliability in packaging.


  • Manage the Packaging Technology team by providing critical technical expertise and tools to succeed on assigned tasks or projects.
  • Accountable for packaging quality specifications for the company and responsible for the development and maintenance of packaging technical specifications across all business units.
  • Communicate and work closely with all development groups including Marketing, Product Development, Packaging Graphics Design and Engineering to commercialize projects for new business and cost opportunities.
  • Drive innovation by presenting new packaging concepts and technologies to support Marketing, Product Development and processing ideas. Partner with Marketing to deliver on Innovation & Renovation objectives.
  • Continuously explore and evaluate new, applicable packaging technologies and implement best practices supporting manufacturing efficiencies, cost improvement, food safety and sustainability. 
  • Play a key role in maintaining strong relationships with incumbent suppliers and selecting new vendors. Adapt continuous improvement vision for product packaging in terms of cost, quality, efficiencies and through put working closely with marketing, product development, purchasing, manufacturing, engineering teams and vendors.
  • Collaborate closely with all relevant stakeholders to support operational excellence within launch initiatives across both internal and external manufacturing facilities.
  • Process parameter documentation in support of packaging equipment purchases and develop packaging testing and validation protocols where necessary.
  • Ensure all projects are completed on time and meet the intended packaging design, quality, cost, functionality, reliability and manufacturability objectives.  


  • Degree in Engineering (Packaging, Chemical or Mechanical). Packaging Engineering degree preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in Food packaging development and technology. Experience in meat processing industry preferred.
  • Proven people and project management skills. Demonstrated leadership in establishing great functional rapport with Marketing, Product Development, Purchasing, Engineering and Manufacturing teams.
  • Possess excellent technical competence in food packaging systems with comprehensive knowledge of packaging materials (primary, secondary and tertiary), high speed packaging systems, food process engineering, continuous improvement tools and best management practices in automated manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results by working autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Proven ability to bring new, unsolicited innovative ideas forward.
  • Skillful at effectively leveraging internal and external resources to drive projects, develop sustainable packaging and ensure flawless execution for the organization.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, SAP, AutoCAD and MS project.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 25% of the time.
