Maple Leaf is an organization of passionate people who are passionate about food.  We currently have an opening for a 4th Class Stationary Engineer within our Edmonton Poultry Plant.


  • Operate equipment to support various production units including turbines, pumps, compressors, turbo alternators, cooling towers, water treatment systems, gas systems, and HVAC equipment
  • Perform chemical analysis on process water and adjust systems to maintain operations, including the handling of reagents, chemicals, and chemical injection equipment
  • Familiar with ammonia refrigeration systems and controls
  • Maintain all safety equipment used for confined space and ammonia emergencies, including SCBA and ammonia monitors
  • Provide isolation, lockouts, clearances and safe work permits on utilities systems and process equipment
  • Assist in the development of energy control procedures and safe work practices
  • Assist with maintenance planning and repair of equipment
  • Carry out verbal/written work requests and apply corrective measures in a timely fashion
  • Has an above average working knowledge of related mechanical requirements and application of corrective measures in an environment with conflicting priorities
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance on related boiler and steam equipment and proactively identify mechanical issues to reduce machine downtime
  • Input notes, labour hours and parts used into the plant’s SAP computerized maintenance system
  • Fulfill all Health and Safety, Food Safety, HACCP, WHIMS, MSDS and BRC and Company policy requirements
  • Work with and coordinate contractors for projects such as boiler inspections, boiler re-tubing, heat exchanger replacements along with basic preventative and corrective work such as combustion analysis
  • Maintain proper records as per regulations for boilers, heat exchangers, PRVs and related equipment

  • The ability to withstand extreme temperatures
  • The ability to quickly respond to process upsets
  • The ability to exert significant muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects
  • The ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time, including bending and stooping
  • The ability to exert muscle force at intervals throughout a work shift. This involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue
  • The ability to negotiate different areas of the plant, including climbing stairs and ladders, and moving around barriers
  • The job is within a fresh poultry processing plant and you may be required to work within various areas of the facility. Depending on the area you work in, the environmental conditions may be hot, cold, dirty, dusty, wet or noisy
  • Safety is our highest priority, and safety procedures and guidelines must be adhered to at all times
  • Employees work in a unionized, highly industrial setting under animal welfare and food safety timelines
  • This means that you may be required to work different days of the week each time you rotate shifts. In other words, you may be required to work Saturdays, Sundays and holidays
  • The position requires you to work overtime as needed
Punctuality and attendance are extremely important to the success of the operations in general as well as contributing to an overall positive team environment.

  • 4th Class Operating Engineer Certificate; * Minimum of 3 years experience in an industrial environment
  • Food processing experience is considered an asset
  • Able to work shifts on 24 hours / 7 day week
  • Accustomed to working with a SAP based computerized maintenance and inventory reporting system
  • Excellent English, both verbal and written skills
  • Self-directed / motivated team player, open to new technology with a sense of urgency and attention to detail
  • Able to work effectively under conflicting priorities
  • Strength and stamina required to work with heavy equipment weighing in excess for 25kg
  • Must have a full complement of personal/professional hand tools identified specifically for food safety program
