Multi-Units Manager – Foodservice

 The Opportunity:

Maple Leaf Foods is the largest food company in Canada, with annual sales of nearly $5B, and established relationships with every significant broadline distributor, national account and healthcare operator across the country. The organization has made significant investments in its people, products and food safety, and sustainability - including being the largest producer of “Raised Without Antibiotics” pork and poultry in the country – and is poised for growth. A key segment that the company is targeting to achieve this growth is within its food service channel, and it is looking for a Multi-Unit Account Manager that can help the organization meet this objective.

The Multi-Unit Account Manager is a highly entrepreneurial leader that is passionate about customers and has a proven ability to build meaningful, long-lasting relationships with large partners.  They have a track record of building businesses from the ground up, by leveraging their deep customer relationships, participating in product ideation and price discovery, and managing newly built businesses on a go-forward basis (including P&L management). The successful candidate will also have existing relationships with broadline distributor partners that she/he can leverage to help ensure end-to-end connectivity for Maple Leaf’s end-user partners.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:

  • Lead selling efforts with Canadian Multi-Unit operators – both existing and new. 
  • Build meaningful partnerships that deliver growth for both Maple Leaf and its customers. Develop a deep understanding of customers’ strategies.
  • Ensure these strategies are well understood internally at Maple Leaf. Work with cross-functional teams to develop sales plans that meet both organizational and customer goals (i.e., volume, gross profit, trade spending, promotional plans, and business development plans).
  • Utilize superior relationship building and people management / organizational / strategic selling skills to ensure successful execution of plans.
  • Build and maintain a knowledge base of competitors, operator/customer trends in the marketplace, and integrate this information into strategic recommendations.
  • Develop and maintain a detailed database of opportunities by customer, which defines competitive landscape, expected financials, and timing.
  • Be part of building a growth culture, rooted in discipline and fundamentals, that delivers winning customer partnerships, by instituting operating rhythms and practices for awareness and alignment of priorities within the team.
  • Manage and deliver P&L targets developed through annual planning processes, including volume, sales, and gross profit. This includes regular check-ins against targets via monthly / quarterly / annual forecasting.  
  • Forecast and deliver against budgeted direct SG&A and trade spend expectations.
  • Set a standard of excellence for peers and the broader team.
  • Other projects/duties as assigned or needed.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with a track record of consistently delivering results.
  • 10+ years of progressive sales experience in managing customers, strategies, and business.  
  • University degree in business or related area.
  • Deep food service industry relationships and customer knowledge.
  • Specific knowledge and experience selling packaged goods preferred.
  • Ability to understand MLF and customer goals and translate into clear and concise customer strategies with effective action plans.
  • Ability to influence and leverage cross-functional resources (dedicated and/or shared) to identify and solve strategic issues.
  • Exceptional story telling skills.
  • Synthesize data, insights and inferences into a coherent and logical chain that others can execute on.
  • Strong negotiation skills including listening, probing, identifying interests, and mutually solving problems.
  • High energy, self-motivated, and proactive. Excited to engage in a fast-paced and action-oriented environment.
  • Creative and strategic thinker who consistently looks for new and impactful ways to drive results.
