Sanitation Manager

 The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Sanitation Manager is responsible for effectively managing the cleaning and sanitization of processing equipment, utensils and the entire plant environment. The role is responsible for the development and execution of the sanitation program. The role strives for continuous improvement by analyzing sanitation performance metrics, determining root causes and implementing effective corrective actions to meet food safety and product quality standards. The role leads and engages the team towards compliance with GMPs, Safety, WHMIS, HACCP, CFIA and corporate standards associated with the sanitation process.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:

  • Consistent with our leadership values, act as a champion for our culture by leading the sanitation team in the development and execution of a positive and productive environment that permeates through all levels and is focused on the needs of our people. 
  • Oversee the cleaning and sanitization of equipment, surfaces, utensils and plant environment by providing direction, motivation and technical support to all sanitation employees to ensure sanitation process is completed effectively and on time. 
  • Plan, actively engage, communicate and provide direction on all sanitation related activities in all programs such as: Quality Assurance/Food Safety, HACCP, Corporate/customer/BRC requirements, employee relations, Health and Safety Programs, Operations, Maintenance etc. as a member of the Senior Plant Team. 
  • Manage the master sanitation schedule by establishing priorities, scheduling, assigning work and communicating with sanitation staff and key stakeholders frequently and regularly to ensure tasks are completed effectively and on time. 
    • Works with QA staff during Pre-op.
    • Communicates Pre-op findings to team.
    • Chairs the sanitation meeting, keeps minutes.
    • Verifies sanitation/chemical records.
    • Ensures supervisor responsibility for daily sanitation with staggered shifts.
    • Prepare Master Sanitation Schedule for non daily tasks.
    • Responsible along with sanitation team lead for workers to use PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
    • Follows up on outstanding QA issues and communicates back to hourly workers.
  • Be accountable to train and manage the front line employees so that there is no disruption to the daily plant schedule and the employees abide by the MLF workplace policies and procedures for the site. 
  • Support and promote the company’s health and safety program, maintain a safe working environment and ensure continued compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and JHSC recommendations. 
  • Develop and execute training to meet all job requirements and ensure employee compliance with all company and regulatory requirements. 
  • Manage the sanitation budget and maintain inventory control of all sanitation related materials including chemicals, equipment, tools and PPE. Ensure site inventory levels are maintained, on budget and stored appropriately. 
  • Measure and analyze Sanitation performance metrics and lead a weekly cross functional sanitation meeting to review findings and assign investigation and corrective action responsibilities to drive continuous improvement. 
  • Audits sanitation related activities, report non-compliances and takes corrective actions to assure compliance to all quality assurance food safety requirements. Update Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs) and verify compliance by front line employees. 
  • Ensure the chemical dispensing systems function within specification. Solicit technical support from the sanitation chemical provider or corporate sanitation to optimize the cleaning chemistry and application methods. 
  • Other responsibilities as required 

What You’ll Bring:

The successful candidate will be results-oriented, thrive in a fast paced, demanding environment, and have the ability to develop positive working relationships. Candidates must have:
  • Three (3) years in a responsible position in sanitation and demonstrated knowledge of sanitation principles
  • The ability to be accurate and consistent when doing inspections and maintaining records.
  • Understanding of Microsoft office applications including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to exercise judgment, make timely decisions and be open to change.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Ability to take the initiative and problem solve
  • A working knowledge of HACCP and food safety systems.
