Director of Finance - Specialty Meat

 The Opportunity:

The Director of Finance, Specialty Meats is accountable for the Specialty Meats financial management reporting cycle which includes weekly, monthly, and quarterly tracking of results versus budgets and prior forecast, as well as the annual budget and 5 Year Strategy financial plans. Outputs of this role drive key inputs into Maple Leaf’s performance management cycle used by the CEO, COO and CFO. Acts as the business partner to the senior leaders to drive improved business performance in a business with high growth potential.  The position supports 3 key sites and is primarily located in our Laval facility, thereby French language would be an asset.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:

As the Finance lead for Specialty Meats, some of the exciting responsibilities you will be directly accountable for include:

Weekly/Monthly/Quarterly Cycle

  • Leads weekly Vitals reporting including channel Gross Profit at Standard (GPS), plant variances and KPIs
  • Partners with the reporting team to perform analysis for the business unit, ensures accuracy and completeness of P&L and summarizes financial performance vs. budget for senior management
  • Leads preparation of the monthly Vitals and Full Year Forecast (FYF) and identifies key Risks & Opportunities (R&O) across the facilities and with commercial teams
  • Manages weekly R&O submission to MLF FP&A for review with CEO & CFO and rest of Senior Executive team
  • Prepares quarterly EBIT & External Sales analysis for Finance Leadership team and investor relations

Annual Planning

  • Leads the annual 5-year planning process for Specialty Meats
    • Leads the annual budget process for Specialty Meats including overhead, budgets by location plants, annual review of DPC variances and Direct Labour rates to support Bill of Material  updates
    • Capital plans by location and project type
    • Direct SG&A as well as allocations from MLF

Governance & Controls

  • Reviews and approves Specialty Meats capital expense requests to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with MLF’s capital expenditure & accounting policies
  • Responsible for continuously improving the accuracy and efficiency of reporting and controls with regards to each facilities’ operational reporting and including the pro forma Specialty Meats reporting framework

People/Team Development

  • Manage the productivity and efficiency of a team of approximately 7 people in 3 manufacturing sites
  • Manage the personal development (PAD) process and annual merit increase
  • Develop and implement action plans resulting from the annual people survey process
  • Personal and professional development
  • Succession planning for the team

Position Outcomes

  • Improved profitability through growth in value-added sales & disciplined revenue management practices
  • Plants achieve zero cost increase through ZBB, Continuous Improvement plans and capital investments
  • Proactive identification and communication of key R&Os for review with CEO, CFO and V-P Business Finance.
  • MLF Policies and controls applied throughout areas of responsibility
  • Development of a strong, agile, and responsive finance team that partners with the reporting group and business operators, identifies and helps to manage the key risks inherent in the business

  • Demonstrated knowledge of all FP & A core competencies with emphasis on forecasting (annual planning process) and standard costing (budget process, variance analysis, BoM updates)
  • Strong business acumen and critical thinking skills
  • Proven evaluator and developer of talent
  • Ability to communicate concisely and precisely both verbally and in written form
  • Exceptional organization leadership, ability to manage time, set priorities and work efficiently under pressure
  • High intellect, can adjust quickly to circumstances without losing sight of own responsibilities and organizational goals
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience in the CPG industry or non-CPG manufacturing environment
  • Contextual knowledge of SAP ERP, SAP BPC, Blackline
  • Experience with full life cycle of Finance systems implementation, including project and change management
  • Bilingual (French/English) would be an asset
