Lab Assistant The Opportunity:
Position key responsibilities are performing routine laboratory procedures in accordance with our quality standards. A variety of lab, scheduling, quality, and necropsy functions will be performed on a daily basis.
A snap shot of some of the exciting things you will lead and do:
Candidate shall be responsible for the knowledge of and compliance to those aspects of the Quality Management System under the laboratory’s Scope of Accreditation
Preparation of Lab’s daily activities; reagents, media, equipment start-up, and lab cleaning and disinfection
Support the Laboratory Information Management System through the collection, receiving, preparation and data entry pertinent to tested samples
Support Q.A. programs through scheduling of various sample, testing, and vaccination requirements
Conduct a variety of microbiological analyses as per standard SOPs. These tests may include the handling of pathogenic organisms from poultry and environmental sources
Conduct verification checks and procedure documentation in order to support the Accreditation requirements of the Microbiology Lab. This includes but is not restricted to incubator temperature checks, lab disinfection, waste preparation and removal and other tasks as assigned
Report and distribute test results to clients once test data has been approved
Maintenance of Ag Ops biosecurity and foreign animal disease programs
Conduct Oocyst Per Gram (OPG) and Fecal Egg testing
Prepare, perform, and document serological tests such as ELISA and plate agglutination
Support client and customer requests within internal guidelines
Assistance with poultry necropsies and medical records
Assistance with scheduling of farm visits and tracking bird submissions to ensure maintenance of Veterinary-Client-Patient-Relationship.
Update health monitoring tools in collaborative team
Present compiled data to external teams
Perform monthly inventory, purchasing, and receiving of supplies and goods
Perform sensory evaluations on shelf life products and ensure lab is well stocked and resourced. Maintain lab equipment
Will be involved in other areas of development such as assisting in yearly budgeting process
Conduct training of new personnel
Reporting results to government as required.
Assistance with data entry/analysis including but not limited to: Salmonella results, hatchery microbial results and trending, broiler case information, broiler breeder case information, serology results
Assistance with environmental sampling procedures when required in hatcheries and/or poultry barns
Assistance with training and/or on-site verification of sampling procedures when required in hatcheries and/or poultry barns
Typing/compiling meeting or visit notes for sharing with broader team
Assistance with preparation and/or revision of Standard Operating Procedures
Assistance with laboratory cleaning
Assistance with other laboratory procedures where required
Other tasks as required

What you will bring:
Must have a Post-Secondary education, could include Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Microbiology, Quality Assurance, or Food Science program
Preference will be given to applicants with a microbiology education
One to two years experience in a laboratory environment
Good understanding of Safety Codes and Good Laboratory Practices
Computer Skills: skilled user of Microsoft office applications and Excel graphing applications
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Continuous improvement background and performance
Strong problem solving skills.
Organized, reliable, able to manage in fast paced environment
Able to work independently and in a team environment.
Good interpersonal skills
